Thank you for purchasing this custom World Class JT5 transmission designed for the Jaguar 6 cylinder E type platform. These transmissions are assembled with higher quality control standards and closer tolorancing than factory built Borg Warner T5's. Medatronics Corporation's Autodyne division has been involved in the T5 program since 1983. Autodyne is a remanufacturer of standard transmissions for General Motors, transmission chains such as Aamco and various repair facilities for over 15 years, worldwide.
Since these transmissions are designed for the Jaguar platform they will make E Type conversions easy and cost effective. They are designed to bring the shifter, and transmission mount within a reasonable mounting range for various kit designers as well as give your customer a transmission that requires no modifications to the floor. Converting to JT5 allows for cheaper replacement parts and longer parts availability. Below are some suggestions for creating beautiful JT5 conversions.
Most people are modifying existing manual shift bell housings to accept the JT5. If you decide to use an adapter plate you will have to make an extended crankshaft pilot bushing, otherwise the factory bushing will work fine. We can supply longer input shafts on certain models to correct for up to 3/4" of back movement. The shifter, and cross member mounts are within range to compensate for 1/2" movement as well. Here are some useful measurements:
JT5 and JAGUAR 4 Speed Measurements
| Measurment Location | JT5 | Jaguar |
|---|---|---|
| Front mounting face to end of tail housing | 12.25" | 15" |
| Front mounting face to transmission mount center | 12.75" | 14" |
| Front mounting face to shifter center | 12" | 11.75" |
| Front mounting face to end of input shaft | 7" | 7" |
| Input shaft pilot bushing diameter | .492 | .492 |
After modifying a bell housing or creating an adapter plate. A simple steel plate is all that is required to extend the transmission mount pad back to meet the factory mount location. The bolt pattern for the mount is a standard GM type. Various mounts with this bolt pattern are available in many offsets and heights.
The shifter stub supplied allows for direct welding of the factory stick or welding of a bracket to accept the factory stick. We also sell a heavy duty JT5 billet shifter. JT5 HD shifters have provisions for a bolt on stick or bolt on adapter bracket. JT5 shifter knobs and sticks are available also.
Since the JT5 for the 6 cylinder E type is so short. No provisions for a speedometer cable are available. The limitations in the length of the transmission tunnel as well as the addition of a 5th gear set at the present time make a standard cable hook up impossible. We do have an electronic pick up built into the transmission. An electronic speedometer conversion kit is available from us but requires an exchange speedometer unit. This unit looks like a Smiths speedo when done and is actually better because you can program it for variances in tire size and axle ratios.
The slip yoke supplied with the JT5 bolts to the existing front driveshaft flange. You can use your existing drive shaft flanges and with our Jaguar yoke make a new drive shaft with no slip spline. Calculate the drive shaft length by pushing the slip yoke in the JT5 until it stops and pull it out "1/2" to "3/4". Measure the distance from front and rear axle universal joint center lines to determine the length of the drive shaft. The length of the new shaft flange to flange should be 28.5 inches. Since the JT5 is a good 2 inches longer the yoke can now be bolted to the flange prior to engine and gearbox installation. You install the JT5 by slipping it on to the shaft in the tunnel rather than trying to bolt flanges together.
We recommend DEXTRON II or III oils. Do not use conventional 80w-90w gear lube. Use of any gear lube will ruin the synchro rings and cause lubrication problems. Because the World Class synchro rings are of a fiber composition hypoid type gear lube will cause the rings to break down. If you want to use a synthetic lube, the Mobil 1 Dextron III equivilent gets top honors.
Back Up Light Switch and Service Parts
The JT5 comes with an integral back up light switch. An adapter harness is supplied to make the hook up easy. In the event of a switch failure it is located on the side of the transmission and screws in. Since we use standard Borg Warner service parts the switch, bearings, synchro rings, and majority of wearable parts can be purchased from any Ford or General Motors dealer. In the event you do have a problem with your JT5 we do sell all parts as well as a rebuild kit.
E Type 6 cylinder standard shift bell housings can be modified to fit the JT5 bolt pattern and still use the factory clutch linkage mechanism. An automatic bell housing can also be modified to accept the JT5. If an automatic bell housing is used a hydraulic release bearing must be fitted to the JT5. Hydraulic release bearings can be supplied at an extra cost, but must be ordered with the JT5. A 9.5" clutch disk must be used with a 10 spline 1 1/16" dia. hub. This is the standard Ford spline used in most Ford T5 5 speeds and Toploader 4 speeds, however a 9.5" diameter clutch disk may be difficult to locate. We have disks custom made for us. These are available at an extra cost.
The JT5 is fully synchronized in all 5 forward gears. It has a non synchronized reverse gear. All mainshaft gears are on needle bearings and all blocking rings except for 5th gear are of fiber composition with a dual cone design on 1st and 2nd gear. The weight of a 6 cylinder JT5 is 68 lbs.. These gear sets are rated at 330 Ft. Lbs. static torque.
The JT5 for the 6 cylinder E Type is offered with two popular gear ratios. Our wide ratio JT5 comes with a 1st gear ratio of 3.35, 2nd is 1.99, 3rd is 1.33, 4th is 1.00 and 5th is .73 overdrive. Our close ratio JT5 comes with a 1st gear ratio of 2.95, 2nd is 1.94, 3rd is 1.34, 4th is 1.00 and 5th is .80 overdrive. As you can see 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear ratios of both gear sets are very similar. If you are running a 3.31 or 3.54 rear end gear most people are happy with both gear sets. Use our RPM calculator software to see what RPM is best suited for your needs and compare your requirements to what you currently have.
